FAQS

You Have Questions. We Have Answers.

If you have never been to physical, occupational, or speech therapy, we understand that you may have several questions about your first visit. Below are some of our most frequently asked questions. If you have additional questions before your first visit, feel free to contact one of our locations directly or use our contact form.

Can I see a physical therapist without a prescription or referral from my doctor?

All 50 states and the District of Columbia have approved direct access to physical therapists. This means you can see your physical therapist first, without having a referral or prescription from your doctor. Some insurances require a referral. Please contact us for more information.

Do you have to be an athlete to receive your services?

At REHABNEEDS, we treat a variety of injuries. In fact, the majority of injuries are non-sports-related; they may be post-surgical, work-related, or the result of an accident. Our therapists are trained to meet all of your needs.

Do health insurance programs cover physical therapy?

How long will my appointment last?

Your first appointment will last approximately one hour. Your therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation, which includes medical history review, diagnostic testing, a thorough evaluation of your flexibility, strength and endurance, your current functional deficits and your goals with therapy. At the conclusion of your appointment, your therapist will explain your personalized treatment plan and answer any questions you may have. Your participation and commitment are required to achieve the best outcomes. Subsequent appointments may last anywhere from 30-60 minutes depending on your individualized treatment.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please remember to bring with you your doctor’s prescription (if you have one), your insurance card, a valid photo I.D., and completed paperwork. You can find all of the paperwork you need for your first visit on our New Patient page. Bring any medical assistive devices (brace, splint, cane, walker, or crutches). Wear comfortable clothing or bring clothes to change into, that allows your clinician access to your affected areas and you can move in easily. Please feel free to contact us before your appointment if you have any questions.

Will I get hot packs, massage, or TENs?

Your clinician will develop a customized plan based on your diagnoses and goals. Our team incorporates effective, evidence-based treatment techniques to address the root of your problem and achieve optimal outcomes. The techniques we utilize go beyond massage, ice packs or TENs therapy and your plan may incorporate manual therapy, therapeutic exercise prescription, and education to name a few.

Will I experience pain after my visit?

Due to some of the diagnostic tests and baseline measurements taken during an initial evaluation, you may experience temporary and minimal muscle soreness, pain, irritation, or discomfort. If you have high pain levels, you should communicate with your therapist immediately. They will be able to guide you best to relieve your pain.

What will happen once therapy is completed?

Upon discharge, you receive a home exercise program to further enhance your rehabilitation outcome and prevent the possibility of future re-injury. You also have the option to participate in our Wellness Program.

After an acute injury, should I apply ice or heat?

Use a heating pad or hot pad before you stretch or if you have a muscle spasm. We recommend that after an acute injury you should use ice for 48 hours to help control pain and spasms while minimizing the total damage of the injury by lowering the metabolic needs of the healthy tissue surrounding the injury site.
